What Turns the River Green?

The tradition of dyeing the Chicago River began in 1962 with Stephen Bailey. He was the business manager of the Chicago Journeyman Plumbers Union. One day, Bailey noticed that a plumber’s overalls had been stained green by a dye they used to trace illegal pollution discharges into the river. He realized the dye could color the entire river for St. Patrick’s Day, and the tradition was born.

The earliest attempts used 100 pounds of dye that turned the river green for a week. The process has been refined to use just 40 pounds of vegetable-based powder that lasts about five hours. The modern dye is an environmentally safe orange powder that turns bright green when exposed to water.

Today, the tradition draws thousands of visitors each March.

Major St. Patrick’s Day Events in Chicago

Two marquee events define Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration: the river dyeing and the downtown parade. In 2026, the annual green river dyeing will take place on March 14th at 10 AM. Crowds gather early around the Chicago Riverwalk, Wacker Drive, and the bridges spanning the river. The Michigan Avenue Bridge and Columbus Drive Bridge make for prime viewing.

Shortly after the river is dyed, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins. It travels down Columbus Drive between Balbo Drive and Monroe Drive. The parade is one of the largest in the country, with bagpipe bands, Irish dance troupes, floats, and community organizations all joining in.

More celebrations starting on Saturday, March 14 include:

Happy Camper

Doors open at 9 AM, and your ticket covers general admission, an all-inclusive drink package, and a breakfast buffet running until noon. Table packages are available separately, but every guest in your party will need their own ticket to get through the door.

Bodega Taqueria

Kick off the day at Bodega West Loop, where Green Curtain is bringing Irish energy and Latin flavor together, starting at 9 AM with a breakfast party running until noon. The fun keeps rolling until 3 AM with DJ sets, drink specials, entertainment, and giveaways. Reservations are encouraged for larger groups.

Roof on the Wit

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day 27 stories above the city at ROOF, just steps from the river dyeing, with Irish drink specials sponsored by Jameson, themed cocktails, Irish fare, giveaways, and live entertainment. It’s a 21+ day party with DJs.

Woodie’s

Woodie’s takes the celebration across three full floors, where fiddles give way to bass drops, Guinness flows freely, and green drinks fuel the kind of spirited decision-making that Old Town will be watching through the street-level windows. Guinness, dancing, and shamrock-level shenanigans all under one roof.

With so much happening across the city, a little planning goes a long way!

Planning Your Day Around Downtown Events

Timing is an important part of making the most of St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago. To get a good viewing spot for the river dyeing, try to arrive before 8:00 AM. The best viewing areas fill up quickly, especially on the bridges and along the Riverwalk. Chicago can be bitterly cold in March, with temperatures often in the 30s or 40s. Be sure to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately.

As you can imagine, the Downtown Chicago streets get extremely congested on St. Patrick’s Day. This is due to high turnout for the festivities, as well as street closures to accommodate the parade. Your best bet is public transportation; locals recommend taking the Red or Blue line to stations near the events. Rideshare services are also an option, though prepare to pay surge pricing. If you drive yourself, park well outside the parade route and walk or use public transit for the final leg.

Beyond logistics, there’s one more consideration worth planning around before you leave the house: The most important thing to remember is that public consumption of cannabis products is illegal in Illinois.

While it is perfectly legal for adults aged 21 and older to consume these products in private residences, you must not smoke, vape, or consume edibles in public spaces. This includes the areas along the parade route, in parks, or on the Riverwalk. Plan to consume early in your home or hotel room before heading out.
