How to Get an Ohio Medical Marijuana Card

When it comes to getting a medical marijuana card Ohio has made it relatively simple to work through the process. The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program offers basic steps that prospective patients need to follow that are outlined below.

  1. Determine if you have a qualifying medical condition to become a  patient

Ohio has a list of over 22 qualifying medical conditions that can get people approved to become a medical marijuana patient. In order to be registered, you must have a physician that will certify that you have one of these conditions. While we can’t list every condition here, some of the qualifying conditions on the list include:

  • Glaucoma
  • Hepatitis C
  • Epilepsy
  • AIDS
  • Chronic Pain
  • PTSD
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/ Lou Gehrig’s disease

2. Locate a CTR physician to become certified

If you believe you have a certifiable medical condition that will qualify you as a medical cannabis patient, your next step is to find an approved doctor to make that certification. The only physicians in Ohio allowed to certify you as a medical marijuana patient must have a Certificate to Recommend (CTR). You can search for a CTR physician through the State Medical Board of Ohio. Locate a preferred doctor and schedule an appointment for either an in-person or telemedicine evaluation. During your appointment, the doctor will assess your medical condition and records and determine if you would benefit from medical cannabis. If they find that you do have a qualifying condition, they will access the state’s Patient Registry system and add their recommendations. This  information is entered into the system along with your valid state ID number taken from your driver’s license or other form of state-issued ID.

3. Register with the Ohio medical marijuana registry

Once you have visited a physician and gotten certified, you will receive an email with a link to complete your medical cannabis card application. You will log in to your profile on the Patient Registry and provide additional requested documents and information. You may need to provide copies of your medical records, driver’s license, and other personal information. Once you have completed all requested fields, you simply submit your application and wait for approval from the state via email.
